Welcome to AKS!

Traditional martial arts have many benefits, but it takes years of dedicated work to master these systems. When it comes to practical self-defense - techniques that can be used effectively the very day you learn them - one system stands head and shoulders above the rest: Krav Maga.

AKS Karate is home to Charleston's most comprehensive self-defense and Mixed Martial Arts program, as well as the only officially certified Crossfit training center in the Lowcountry. We offer classes in Krav Maga, Karate, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (in official association with UFC star Hermes Franca), traditional Muay Thai kickboxing, and competition-style MMA.

Please note that our instructors are NOT low-grade amateurs - each class is taught by a credentialed expert in the art.

AKS founder and lead instructor Matt Robinson is the only certified Krav Maga instructor in the entire state of South Carolina, which means that AKS is the ONLY place to learn real Krav Maga!

WARNING: Any other instructors in this area claiming to teach Krav Maga are NOT offically certified by Krav Maga Worldwide.

Please take a look at our staff and philosophy, take a look at our convenient schedule of classes, and then stop in to observe a class, or to try out a free lesson!

What is Krav Maga?

Krav Maga (the name means "contact combat") was born in the streets and alleys of Europe, where small bands of unarmed resistance fighters developed down-and-dirty techniques to successfully defend themselves against heavily-armed Nazi thugs. It was later perfected and fine-tuned by the Israeli military, and is now taught to American civilians by a small number of intensively-trained instructors.

Krav Maga is not a sport. It is a combat-proven system of self-defense for the real world, where there is no such thing as a fair fight. If you want to learn how to survive or prevent an attack on yourself or a loved one - regardless of your size or strength - you owe it to yourself to attend a free introductory Krav Maga class at AKS Karate. Just show up, any Tuesday or Friday at 6:30 p.m., and find out for yourself what thousands of Krav Maga students around the world already know.
